5 Tips to Combine Discounts or Coupons to Save More
Did you know there are ways to combine discounts? Often we only think of their reward programs or specific sales. However, if you combine the following options you can get even bigger discounts.
- Sign up to the loyalty program for anywhere you plan to shop. Most have welcome discounts.
- Sign up for cash back using Cash Rewards, Shopback, Honey, Swagbucks and Kickback. You can only use one at a time. Be sure to activate them when shopping.
- Get gift cards at a discount for the stores you shop at. The Entertainment App has a selection of gift cards for 4% to 10% off including Woolworths, Priceline Pharmacy, BCF and Supercheap Auto to name a few.
- Shop when things are on sale or in a clearance section.
- Enter any relevant competitions, do any surveys for future discounts etc.
Let me explain in more detail below.
Sign up for Loyalty Programs
Most shops have loyalty programs where you can collect points. Generally, there is a discount for new members, birthday discounts or freebies and other offers.
Join all of the ones you shop at regularly or are about to shop at. Either ask in-store or check their websites.
Sign up for Cash Back Programs
Cash back programs are programs you can join for free and they will tell you when you can get cash back and how much you can get back. Then, you activate their offer, do your shop and they confirm with the shop you spent money there.
Once that is confirmed, you get the money back into your account with the cash-back program. You then transfer the money to your bank account. Sometimes it takes a couple of months but you can see if the transaction is pending, approved, or declined.
Get Gift Cards at a Discount
Using discounted gift cards can save you up to 10% more. Coles and Woolworths often have discounts on gift cards they sell for a variety of stores and services. You can accrue points for their reward programs when buying gift cards.
The Entertainment Membership* is an app you can use to get discounts on a variety of things including up to 10% off gift cards to various stores. You can also get up to 50% off restaurants, takeaway, discounts on car hire, accommodation and so much more.
Most of these discounted gift cards are valid for 3 years and can be stored electronically on your phone. Be aware, gift cards are treated the same as cash so if you lose them, you cannot have them replaced.
Shop in the Sales
Stores constantly have things on sale. Grocery stores rotate their sales regularly in a cycle so it is easy to track when what you want is on sale.
Clothing and other stores do theirs seasonally so at the end of a season, items will go on sale then often onto a massive clearance.
Not all welcome discounts or cash-back offers are valid on sale items though so you need to check the fine print when you do it.
Enter Competitions, Surveys, and Receipt Details
Once you have completed your shop, check to see if there are any offers with what you have purchased. It might be a competition to enter or a survey to do that is at the end of the receipt or emailed to you.
I’ve won a few of the competitions and with the surveys, they are usually quick and get you bonus points or entry into a competition.
With your receipt, take a photo, upload it and collect points to cash out for a gift card. ReceiptJar is one way to do this. Use the code KYLIT3Q2H to get a 200 bonus points when you join.
How Exactly can Combining Discounts Work?
Let me give you an example of a shop you probably shop at – Big w. With this example, on a $200 shop, you could save $40 or more plus get Everyday Reward points.
Firstly, sign up to Everyday Rewards, load the app on your phone and activate any boosters.
Next, sign up for a free 30 day trial of Everyday Extra to get a bonus 10% off at Big W. There are numerous other benefits to the program including extra reward points you can cash in later for money off your shop.
Join The Entertainment Membership to get 5% off gift cards at Big W (as well as other discounts). If you want regular discounts on gift cards and other things, it is well worth the membership fee.
Sign up to Shopback and activate the option to get up to 2.25% off at Big W. You can do this either by clicking the pop up when you are on the Big W website or by shopping through Shopback.
Plus, if you are a member of Shopback and spend over $20 at Big W, once you have done your shop, Shopback will give you a $10 bonus.
Buy what you need to buy at Big W and include the code from Everyday Extra to get another 10% off your total shop. Sometimes they have huge clearances and sales and your 10% off is valid on all of it.
If anything you have purchased has a competition attached to it, make sure you enter it now. Big W might send you a survey about your experience, so make sure you do that too.
Upload your receipt to ReceiptJar and get some points there.
How to Combine Discounts for Groceries
This method works for groceries too. Know where you shop and follow the process. You can easily save at least 15% off at Woolworths, get special bonuses for Coles as well as locally owned shops, delis etc.
Activate every offer that comes through, pay attention to when gift cards are on sale and bonus offers are available and shop accordingly.
How Much Extra Can You Save?
When you start looking at the stores you shop at such as Big W, Woolworths, Priceline, Supercheap Auto, BCF, Harvey Norman etc and apply this method, you can see some big savings.
It all comes down to knowing what discounts are available and following this process. Remember though, if you didn’t need to buy it or are shopping more because it’s discounted, you aren’t really saving.
