3 Tips to Prepare Your Home Office

If you work from home, or you are thinking about doing so at some point, you need to consider a few things.

You should be able to work from home easily enough, but you need to ensure that your home is somewhere you can easily work.

If it isn’t, then you might struggle to make it work as well as possible, and you might need to think about some of the things you can do to improve this.

Let’s take a look at this in some detail now.

1. General Maintenance

First of all, you need to ensure that you are keeping up with the general maintenance of the home.

All those little odd jobs that take time away or frustrate you or distract you need to be dealt with.

Otherwise time and energy will be wasted when you are trying to work from home which will reduce your performance.

Reduce performance is one of the reasons employers force workers back to the office.

Walk through your home and review everything that needs to be fixed, especially the things you use regularly.

Check the lighting is adequate, the bulbs are bright enough, and the powerpoints are in places you need them, fix any leaks, taps, problematic doors, all of it.

This will include bringing in electricians, plumbers and the like to ensure that everything is as it should be, and to fix it if it isn’t.

Doing this will enable you to focus on your work and not get distracted or frustrated by those inconveniences.

2. Space

Where are you going to work from within your home?

Look at your space and try to figure out what you can do to ensure you can fit an office.

Some people have a spare room they can easily convert which is the simplest option.

Others convert under the stairs, above the stairs, the attic, basement or similar areas.

Sometimes there is a little nook in your home big enough to fit what you need in the office.

Converting part of a garage is another option but is more expensive.

What do you need to enable you to work from home?

For example, if you are simply working on your computer a desk and the space for that is possibly all you need.

If you are doing marketing and need room for photography, a decent background, podcasting gear etc. then you need more space.

3. Comfort

Since we tend to work long hours, you want to be as comfortable as possible in your home office.

Get a desk that is either the right height for you or easily converts.

Consider one that can be both a sitting and standing desk.

If you have the room, look into a walking pad and gym ball as well as a chair to give you options to keep active, improve your core muscles and reduce the impact of sitting at a desk all day.

Check the lighting, air quality, how your office smells and the general vibe in there.

Adding a lamp or improving lighting can make a considerable difference to eye strain.

It’s ideal to have a window of some sort ot help with natural light but at the least, improve light with a lamp or better lighting in general.

Air quality and the ability to air out your space helps with focus and your health.

Being able to open a window, using an air purifier and having indoor plants can help.

Add artwork, get a bookshelf, floor rug and other home decor if desired to make your office feel like you.

With the right levels of comfort, you should be able to work at home so much more easily and effectively, and it’s amazing how well this can work out.

Those are just some of the things that you should think about when it comes to working at home and making sure that the home is ready for it.
